How to Write the Perfect Card Message

Sending a card is one of the most personal things you can do. But staring at a blank page — pen in hand — can feel surprisingly daunting. Whether it's a birthday, a new baby, or just a thinking-of-you moment, here's how to write something that truly lands.

1. Why So Many Cards Come Blank Inside

You might have noticed that a lot of greeting cards — including many in our collection — come blank inside. That's entirely intentional.

A printed message, however lovely, is written for everyone. A blank card is written for one person— by you.

It gives you the freedom to say exactly what you mean, in your own words, without having to cross out someone else's sentiment first. It's a small thing, but it makes the card feel genuinely yours.

So if a blank card has ever felt like a challenge, think of it as an invitation instead.

And if you're still not sure what to write — or want to say something truly special — our Sentimental Keepsake Wallet Cards are a beautiful alternative. Beautifully messaged and small enough to tuck inside any card, they do the talking for you — and become something the recipient can keep long after the envelope is recycled.

2. Start With How You Feel

Don't overthink the opening. A simple, honest line is always better than a forced one:

  • "I'm so proud of you."
  • "You deserve all the happiness today."
  • "I've been thinking of you lately."

Authenticity beats eloquence every time.

3. Make It Personal

Reference something specific — a shared memory, an inside joke, or something you genuinely admire about them. Generic messages are forgotten; personal ones are kept.

"I still laugh about that time we got lost in Edinburgh. Here's to many more adventures."

4. Match the Tone to the Occasion

  • Birthday → warm, celebratory, a little playful
  • Sympathy → gentle, simple, no silver linings
  • New baby → joyful, heartfelt, maybe a little humorous
  • Thank you → specific, sincere, brief

5. Keep It the Right Length

Cards aren't essays. Two to four sentences is usually perfect. If you have more to say, write a letter — and tuck it inside.

6. End With Something Warm

Close with love, warmth, or a forward-looking thought:

  • "Can't wait to celebrate with you soon."
  • "Sending you so much love."
  • "Always here if you need me."

Then sign off naturally — Love, With love, Warmly, Always — whatever feels like you.

A Few Things to Avoid

  • Spelling the recipient's name wrong (double-check!)
  • Starting every line with "I"
  • Copying a message directly from Google — people can tell

Final Thought

The best card messages aren't perfect — they're you. A little vulnerability, a genuine thought, and a warm sign-off is all it takes to make someone's day.
